Keynote Speakers

Dr. John Byrne

Dr. John Byrne is an accomplished speaker and Professor of Marketing & Sales at St. Ambrose University. Over his 30-year career he has inspired, educated, and mentored thousands of professionals and students around the globe in multiple business disciplines and in the fields of professional and personal development. Dr. Byrne has degrees from the University of Notre Dame, Loyola University and the University of Iowa. In addition he has achieved some remarkable physical feats including finishing the daunting Leadville 100 Mile Run, ascending the breathtaking Mt. Rainier, and completing the arduous Wisconsin Ironman. Dr. Byrne and his wife are proud parents of their five children and two grandchildren.

Julian Vandervelde 

Julian Vandervelde is a Davenport, IA Native. As a prep at Davenport Central High School he participated in forensics, choir, band, theater, baseball, wrestling, track & field, and football, earning state and national-level honors across multiple platforms. He earned a football scholarship to  The University of Iowa where he was twice voted a captain of the Hawkeye Challenge Summer Program and was a Team Captain his senior year. Before graduating as an Academic All-American with degrees in English, Religious Studies, and Japanese he was a member of the Hawkeye Leadership Group and the Japanese Cultural Association.

Following his academic career Julian was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. He played 5 years in Philadelphia during which time he participated in the Wharton School of Business Tech Startup and Small Business Program in Silicon Valley. He has since moved back to Davenport where he spent time as a Financial Advisor for Northwestern Mutual before being named Quad Cities Market President for Moxie Solar, the top renewable energy company in the Midwest.

Julian has been heavily involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the HavLife Foundation, started the non-profit group Juice Box Charities, and coaches sophomore football at Davenport Central. He and his wife, Paula, and 2 children, Azrael (5) and Elondra (2), live in Davenport and are expecting baby #3 in January.

Fun Facts:

  • Julian is a nationally recognized vocalist and has sang the national anthem for 2 presidents.
  • Julian enjoys anime, manga, video games, and tabletop RPG’s in his free time.
  • Julian currently participates in the Scottish Highland Games.
  • Julian holds an NFL record for the most transactions with a single team (21 – Philadelphia)

Dr. Ron Wastyn

Ron currently teaches in and directs the Master of Organizational Leadership program. He has taught communication and leadership for nearly 30 years. He also coached the intercollegiate debate teams at Wake Forest University, University of Pittsburgh, and James Madison University, earning numerous national awards.

Ron specializes in organizational leadership development with a focus on adaptive leadership, crisis communication, organizational change, interpersonal and public communication, and political rhetoric.

He is also the Senior Consultant for Leadership Development programs for Wastyn & Associates which helps organizations turn their ideas into reality by providing high quality, personalized consulting and services in strategic planning, fundraising, grant development, and leadership education.


Leo Bertling

Leo Bertling has been a PMP since 1997. His background includes equipment maintenance on farm equipment, airborne radar, automated teller machines, currency counters and computerized bank alarm systems. Leo has written technical documentation, developed training coursework and has trained several hundred technicians in classroom/ hands-on lab settings for a former employer.

Today, as the Manager for Planning and Analysis for Pearson's Client Services organization, Leo heads a team responsible for two scheduling and reporting databases. The databases are used by a cross functional group of stakeholders including project managers, finance, HR and Client Services Management. Leo's team needs to help manage the business for today as well as develop new functionality. Interfaces to several Pearson systems provides numerous opportunities to troubleshoot and resolve issues.

Leo's presentation centers on the Apollo RCA (Root Cause Analysis) methodology. As project managers, we have all had the opportunity to solve a problem and take steps to ensure an issue does not recur.  What if the statement was made "You are not interested in a root cause." when problem solving?


Dr. Dan Ebener

Dr. Dan Ebener has been practicing leadership and developing leaders in churches, businesses, and nonprofits since 1975.

He teaches leadership theory, strategic planning, leading change, dialogical skills, conflict resolution, team-building and servant leadership, especially for the Master in Organizational Leadership program. Dan also provides leadership training for churches, nonprofits, and businesses and has conducted strategic planning for over 160 organizations.

Dan has traveled to 67 countries and teaches leadership each summer in Croatia and every other summer in Germany. He is the author of two books on servant leadership, co-author of a book on strategic planning, and author of a fourth (upcoming) book on parish leadership.


Sean Byrd

Sean is a Data Scientist and Project Manager at John Deere. He has managed several transformative projects impacting $0.5 billion dollars in assets.
